WHAT WE DO

Our Program Philosophy
Growing up in today's world isn't easy for any child, but for many kids in our community, it is tougher than you might think. At the Boys & Girls Club of Cypress we want a world where every child is given the opportunity to succeed in life and experience a brighter future. For over 40 years the Boys & Girls Club of Cypress has provided hope and opportunity for young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances.

We are here and committed to providing for all children, regardless of their economic status:
  • A safe, positive place to learn and grow
  • Opportunities to engage in life-enhancing programs and character development experiences
  • High expectations and recognition that affirm the intrinsic value, success, and accomplishments of young people

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Both Club locations offer academic support during the school year, providing daily homework help, tutoring and literacy skill enhancement programs. Club staff and volunteers receive training to help youth stay on task, develop better study skills, and do better in school. Club members are rewarded for regular attendance in the homework club and prizes are given to those who can document letter-grade improvements in test scores and report cards.

Project Learn
High-yield learning activities reinforces and enhance the skills and knowledge young people learn at school.

Power Hour
This research-based homework completion and academic enrichment program is a mandatory program that includes all of our members. Staff and volunteer mentors provide the support and encouragement to ensure that all of our members are getting the assistance they need and the encouragement needed to make it fun and engaging. Mentors are matched with high-need youth. Enrichment activities such as educational games, reading opportunities, and common-core worksheets are provided daily.

NetSmartz
Internet safety classes developed in collaboration with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to teach the importance of safeguarding personal information online.

STEAM Clubs
Members participate in hands-on clubs that focus on different aspects of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). The Club offers multiple STEAM clubs every quarter.

Summer Brain Gain
Summer learning loss prevention program designed to help members stay on track for the upcoming school year.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES

Our vision is to empower youth to make healthful choices. Our "Triple Play" program emphasizes good nutrition, regular physical activity, and improving overall well-being.
Healthy Habits
Once a week, members learn about different health and nutrition concepts and enjoy creating healthy snacks in the kitchen. Afterward, members participate in a fitness activity outside that demonstrates the importance of daily exercise.

Triple Play
Triple Play is a research-based health and wellness program in which every member is encouraged to participate in 90 minutes of vigorous physical activity every day. This health and wellness program increases the overall health of Club members ages 6-18 by increasing their daily physical activity, teaching them good nutrition and helping them develop healthy relationships. We offer 90 minutes of vigorous physical activity each day and encourage all children to participate, especially those who don't generally consider themselves athletic or skilled at games and sports. We create an environment that is emotionally supportive so that everyone feels encouraged to participate at their own level.

Smart Girls
Smart Girls is a program created by Boys & Girls Clubs of America that promotes healthy lifestyles and self-esteem enhancement for girls.

Daily Fitness Program
Kids participate in a daily fitness challenge that teaches skills in a particular area of physical fitness. Monday focuses on flexibility activities such as stretching and yoga. Tuesday's focus is on high-energy endurance activities such as running and relay races. On Wednesday members learn strength and group sports skills.

Wii & Kinect Fitness
Kids participate in vigorous physical activity by learning how to dance to a choreographed music video using eye and body coordination.

Positive Sprouts Garden
The Club King program was selected as one of the local clubs by the Boys & Girls Club of America to participate in the creation of a community garden through a partnership with Amway. Through this garden, the Club aimed to teach the importance of including fruits and vegetables in the members’ diet. The members help care for the garden weekly and enjoy creating recipes from the materials they harvest.

CHARACTER AND LEADERSHIP

Our vision is to inspire a generation of engaged youth who balance self-concern with concern for others. Our Youth of the Year and Member of the Month programs recognize members for their academic success, strong moral character, and service to the club and community.

Junior Staff
Members 12 year of age and up apply to participate, interview with staff and are selected based upon their ability to serve as positive role models. Club members gain valuable experience while serving the Club. They work under the direction of staff to help members complete their homework, participate in fitness activities and create art projects. They help manage our free snack and snack bar program and help to maintain and beautify the Club.

Youth of the Year
This year round program fosters young people’s character, personal growth and leadership qualities. Members are selected as Youth of the Month representatives based upon academic success, moral character and service to the community. One youth is selected as the Youth of the Year and participates in regional events and competitions. Additional levels of recognition are possible, culminating in selection of a National Youth of the Year.

Community Service
Studies show that young people who engage in service do better in school, maintain positive relationships with adults and peers and avoid risky behaviors. By engaging members in ongoing service opportunities, we provide them with the tools and support needed to become productive, caring and responsible citizens.

Cyberbullying & Bullying Classes
Members learn the effects that bullying, in-person or online, can have on others and come up with proactive ways to keep from being bullying as well as to help others who are being bullied.

Torch Club
A small group leadership and service club for members ages 11-13. Torch Club members learn to elect officers and work together to implement activities related to Club and community service, health and fitness, and social recreation.

Triple Play Leadership Club
A youth leadership service group for members 10 and up that promotes fitness, community service, healthy eating, and an improved ability to interact positively with peers.
